The Catholic Worker first begun as a newspaper to spread the ideas of a Christian Revolution. It was Peter Maurin’s idea to start a newspaper and that greatly appealed to Dorothy Day because she was a journalist. At first she protested to Peter that they did not have the money to do it. Day says peter replied “In the Catholic Church one never needs any money to start a good work. People are what are important”. In 1933, the first Catholic Worker newsletter was distributed in New York by Dorothy Day and other Catholic Worker volunteers.  The front page contained an essay by Peter Maurin called Blowing the Dynamite. Peter Maurin’s words were, and still are, dynamite.  And because the Church – the Body of Christ – is Dynamite, is Explosive in its Word and in its Love,  the Alliance Catholic Worker newsletter is Dynamite.

Blowing the Dynamite

“Writing about the Catholic Church,
a radical writer says:
“Rome will have to do more
than to play a waiting game;
she will have to use
some of the dynamite
inherent in her message.”
To blow the dynamite
of a message
is the only way
to make the message dynamic.
If the Catholic Church
is not today
the dominant social dynamic force,
it is because Catholic scholars
have failed to blow the dynamite
of the Church.
Catholic scholars
have taken the dynamite of the Church,
have wrapped it up in nice phraseology,
placed it in an hermetic container
and sat on the lid.
It is about time
to blow the lid off
so the Catholic Church
may again become
the dominant social dynamic force.”

Dynamite was a favorite word of Peter Maurin. It was also a favorite word of St Paul. In his epistles he regularly uses the word dynamite, the greek root ‘dynamuis’ translated in English translations of Scripture as ‘power’ doesn’t carry the same dynamic radicality as the Greek root. The dynamite which is inherent in the Church’s message has been kept under the lid by Catholic scholars and suppressed and distorted by the media. Alliance Catholic Worker produces this newsletter ‘to blow the lid off’ and use the dynamite to promote the social teachings of the Church and help people discover the explosive treasure that is the reality of God’s Love.

The Catholic Worker began as a renewal movement in the Church, returning to it’s sources and re-articulating the Gospel for a new age.Proposing the Gospel anew in a culture that has grown deaf and disinterested with it is what Blessed John Paul the Great called ‘the New Evangelization’. Alliance Catholic Worker is a community of the New z promoting a Culture of Life and the social doctrine of the Church. Utilizing social media we hope to educate a new generation of young people in the radical message that Christ’ Resurrection has for our world. Blessed John Paul the Great said “essential to the New Evangelisation is a proclamation of the social teaching of the Church”.

It is our prayer that the Word of God will be brought to fruition in the Works of Mercy, corporal and spiritual, and that this dynamite will cause a revolution of the heart.
